What we mean by thoughtful
The quiet standards behind the products we choose to make.
“Thoughtful” is doing a lot of work in a lot of marketing copy, ours included. It is worth being specific about what we actually mean, so it can be checked rather than admired.
It means someone decided
Every default in a considered product is a choice somebody made and could defend. The opposite is not carelessness so much as accumulation — settings, options and screens that exist because nobody chose to remove them.
It means the unglamorous parts work
- Empty states that explain rather than apologise.
- Errors that say what to do next.
- Offline behaviour designed, not discovered.
- Text that scales to the largest accessibility size without breaking.
It means we stop
The hardest part of making something considered is finishing it. There is always another feature that would be reasonable to add. Choosing not to is the standard.
